The controversy originated from a public meeting held on July 18, where Markendiyan responded to the Chief Minister's remarks about his "search for father." The statement by the Chief Minister was widely interpreted as an indirect criticism of DMK president M K Stalin following the election defeat from the Kolathur constituency.
During his address at the meeting, Markendiyan allegedly stated, "In the Assembly, the Chief Minister says he is searching for the father. Shameless Chief Minister. We will take care of you in the Assembly. He says he will lock the doors of the Assembly. If he locks them, his bones will be crushed. Let him lock the Assembly and see."
Following the speech, a functionary of TVK lodged a complaint, leading to police action against the DMK legislator. Authorities subsequently arrested Markendiyan, and he is currently being questioned at the Tuticorin Superintendent of Police office in connection with the case.
The arrest comes shortly after another action involving a DMK legislator. Earlier this month, Tiruchendur DMK MLA Anitha Radhakrishnan was arrested over remarks directed at Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and was later released on bail on the same day.
The latest arrest has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling establishment and the opposition, with protests by DMK supporters underscoring the growing tensions surrounding statements made against the Chief Minister and the legal action that has followed.
