India's Private Defence Sector Unveils Indigenous Yantur 4.5 kN Turbofan Engine to Power Next-Generation Cruise Missile and Future Combat Platforms

India's indigenous defence manufacturing received a major boost as Paninian India Pvt Ltd unveiled the Yantur 4.5 kN turbofan engine, believed to be the country's first privately developed engine in its class. Designed to power the SVAYATT-L1 cruise missile and future Collaborative Combat Aircraft, the programme marks a significant step toward sovereign propulsion technology and advanced aerospace capabilities.

India's pursuit of self-reliance in advanced defence technology has received a significant boost with Paninian India Pvt Ltd unveiling the Yantur 4.5 kN turbofan engine, believed to be the country's first privately developed engine in its class. Designed entirely in India, the indigenous propulsion system has been developed to power the company's SVAYATT-L1 long-range land attack cruise missile while also providing a scalable foundation for future higher-thrust variants intended for Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCAV) platforms.

The announcement marks a major milestone in India's efforts to establish sovereign propulsion technology through private-sector innovation. Paninian India Founder Raghu Adla described the achievement as a breakthrough for the country's strategic defence capabilities, stating that Yantur represents a pioneering private-sector initiative to build an indigenous propulsion ecosystem for future autonomous strategic systems. He said the accomplishment belongs to the company's young engineering team, advisors, and partners who transformed an ambitious vision into a credible engineering programme.

Adla further stated that the company is now seeking support from the government, industry, and investors to accelerate engine testing, subsystem qualification, and full-system validation. He emphasized that such collaboration would help establish a sustainable indigenous propulsion ecosystem capable of supporting India's long-term strategic requirements.

According to the company, the Yantur programme has been a 100 per cent indigenous effort from the conceptual stage. The engine has now reached the detailed design phase and requires access to specialised testing infrastructure, including multi-stage compressor and turbine test rigs as well as high-altitude testing facilities, to advance toward certification.

Paninian India stated that one of the engine's key strengths lies in its scalable core architecture, which can be expanded to produce higher-thrust derivatives suitable for powering future Collaborative Combat Aircraft platforms. The programme has also been described as a significant step toward strengthening India's capabilities in compact turbofan propulsion, engine control systems, accessory systems, advanced manufacturing technologies, and propulsion-airframe integration.

The Yantur turbofan engine has been developed to power the SVAYATT-L1 long-range land attack cruise missile, which is designed to conduct precision strikes against high-value targets in heavily defended environments. According to the company, the missile incorporates a low-observable airframe, a terrain-hugging flight profile, and advanced navigation and guidance systems that enable autonomous operations, including missions in GPS-denied environments.

The unveiling of the Yantur 4.5 kN turbofan engine represents a major advancement in India's indigenous defence manufacturing ambitions. By combining an entirely domestic design with scalable propulsion technology and applications across advanced missile systems and future combat aircraft, the programme highlights the growing role of the private sector in strengthening the country's strategic aerospace and defence capabilities.
