Sonam Wangchuk Extends Fast Until Youth Leaders Are Allowed to Meet Parliamentarians or He Can Meet Protesters at Hospital

Sonam Wangchuk continues his 23rd day of fasting demanding that youth leaders protesting the NEET-UG paper leak be allowed to meet Parliamentarians or meet him at the Delhi hospital. The Delhi High Court seeks complete medical records while hearing his wife’s appeal over hospital transfer.

Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will continue his fast, now on its 23rd day, until youth leaders protesting over the NEET-UG paper leak are allowed to meet Parliamentarians at Sansad Bhawan or he is permitted to meet them at the hospital in Delhi where he is currently admitted.

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, shared a handwritten message from her husband on social media in which he expressed solidarity with protesters associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical political group demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak issue.

“I will continue my fast (day 23). Seeing the brutality with which peacefully protesting youth are being dealt with, I have decided to continue my fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the Parliamentarians at the Sansad Bhawan or I am allowed to meet them here at the hospital,” Wangchuk wrote in the signed message.

He further stated that he hoped the government would establish accountability for the Education Minister before that point. Wangchuk praised the protesters for maintaining peace despite provocation and appealed to the government and police authorities to resolve the matter by allowing students to present their grievances before Parliament immediately.

Wangchuk also expressed hope that the protesters would continue showing patience and tolerance in the coming days, similar to their approach during the ongoing demonstrations.

The statement came hours after Union Minister JP Nadda held a meeting with CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka amid the protest at Jantar Mantar in central Delhi. During the meeting, CJP representatives submitted a list of demands to the government, including accountability over the NEET-UG paper leak.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which initially appeared on social media as a form of political satire, was established by Abhijeet Dipke, a public relations graduate from Boston University. Dipke has previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party’s social media team.

The Delhi Police has urged the public to remain cautious about misinformation circulating on social media platforms.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court sought Wangchuk’s complete medical records while hearing an appeal filed by his wife challenging a single judge’s decision refusing his discharge from Safdarjung Hospital and his transfer to Medanta Hospital.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that pathology reports alone cannot determine a patient’s medical condition and must always be assessed along with the patient’s clinical condition.

The bench directed Safdarjung Hospital to submit an affidavit containing all pathology reports prepared by the hospital, AIIMS, and the private laboratory, along with all health bulletins issued regarding Wangchuk’s condition.

The continued fast by Sonam Wangchuk, alongside the ongoing youth protest and legal proceedings concerning his medical status, has intensified attention on demands for accountability and the representation of student grievances before authorities.
