Police Action Against Sonam Wangchuk Sparks Political Storm as Manish Sisodia Accuses Centre of Silencing Dissent
Senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia criticized the Central Government after Delhi Police shifted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital during his 20-day hunger strike over alleged examination irregularities. The incident triggered nationwide political criticism and intensified the debate over dissent, policing, and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test paper leak controversy.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sisodia questioned why the police of independent India were allegedly acting with such severity against peaceful protesters. Drawing historical comparisons, he said people had heard of Mughal rulers punishing those who challenged their authority and British police using batons to silence citizens during India's freedom movement. He questioned why the police of an independent nation were now suppressing the voice of the youth with similar brutality.
Earlier in the day, Sisodia also accused the Central Government of attempting to silence those protesting against examination paper leaks. In another post on X, he alleged that the response to the nationwide examination controversy was to use force against anyone raising questions instead of addressing the issue. He described the alleged action as an act of cowardice rather than politics and criticized what he called a reign of intimidation.
The remarks came shortly after Delhi Police removed Wangchuk from the protest venue at Jantar Mantar and admitted him to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday morning. According to Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Charu Bamba, Wangchuk reached the hospital at approximately 7:40 a.m. She said he was suffering from mild dehydration and weakness due to prolonged fasting, while all his vital parameters remained stable. She added that he was under continuous medical examination, monitoring, and treatment.
Delhi Police stated that Wangchuk was shifted to the hospital in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court and on the advice of medical professionals because of his deteriorating health condition. The police also maintained that maximum restraint was exercised throughout the operation.
Following Wangchuk's transfer, Delhi Police convened a high-level meeting at Police Headquarters under newly appointed Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar to review the law and order situation. The meeting also focused on security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Wangchuk has been observing a hunger strike for the past 20 days, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged nationwide examination irregularities, including the controversy surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test paper leak.
The police action triggered widespread political criticism from several Opposition leaders. Among those who condemned the development were Aam Aadmi Party National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Pawan Khera, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee, and leaders of the Samajwadi Party.
The protest also received support from members of left student organizations who joined the demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janata Party at Jantar Mantar. Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that the protest would continue despite the police action against Wangchuk and declared that he would carry forward an indefinite hunger strike.
The developments have intensified the political debate over the handling of public protests, examination irregularities, and the government's response to dissent, placing the issue at the center of national attention as Parliament prepares to begin its Monsoon Session.
