India Approves First Private Satellite-Based Helicopter Instrument Approach at Undavalli Heliport, Marking Major Aviation Milestone

India has approved its first Private Point-in-Space (PinS) instrument approach procedure for helicopter operations at Undavalli Heliport, introducing advanced satellite-based navigation for safer and more reliable flights. The milestone is expected to improve all-weather accessibility, emergency response, tourism, regional connectivity, and overall helicopter operational efficiency across the country.

India has achieved a significant milestone in civil aviation with the approval of the country's first Private Point-in-Space (PinS) instrument approach procedure for helicopter operations at Undavalli Heliport. The landmark development introduces advanced satellite-based navigation technology that enables helicopters to conduct safe and precise instrument approaches to heliports without conventional instrument landing infrastructure.

According to the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Point-in-Space (PinS) procedure is designed to improve the safety and reliability of helicopter operations, particularly during adverse weather conditions and in regions where ground-based navigation aids are unavailable. The system allows pilots to carry out accurate instrument approaches using satellite-based navigation, ensuring greater operational efficiency and enhanced accessibility under challenging flying conditions.

The PinS procedure was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), marking a major advancement in India's aviation infrastructure and navigation capabilities.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu described the approval as the beginning of a new era in helicopter operations, stating that the milestone will significantly enhance flight safety, operational efficiency, and all-weather accessibility. He said the government remains committed to adopting modern technologies and building a globally benchmarked, technology-driven helicopter ecosystem capable of supporting the country's growing aviation requirements.
