Delhi-Mumbai Expressway's Vadodara-Mumbai Section to Open by August 31, 2026, Slashing Travel Time by Half

The Vadodara-Mumbai section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will open by August 31, 2026, cutting travel time between Mumbai and Vadodara from eight hours to four. The 157-kilometre corridor is part of India's 1,386-kilometre mega expressway project, expected to ease traffic, strengthen logistics, boost trade, and improve connectivity across six states.

One of India's largest road infrastructure projects is set to achieve another major milestone as the Vadodara-Mumbai section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is scheduled to open for public use by August 31, 2026. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the new stretch will significantly improve connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Vadodara from nearly eight hours to just four hours.

The 157-kilometre Vadodara-Mumbai section is being developed at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 24,000 crore. The project has been divided into seven construction packages, of which work on five packages has already been completed, while construction on the remaining two packages is progressing rapidly ahead of the scheduled opening.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is among the largest road infrastructure projects in India. The 1,386-kilometre, eight-lane access-controlled greenfield expressway is being constructed at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 95,000 crore. Once fully completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from around 24 hours to nearly 12 hours.

The mega infrastructure corridor passes through Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, providing faster and more efficient road connectivity between the national capital and the country's financial capital.

Several sections of the expressway have already been opened in phases. On February 12, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 246-kilometre Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot section in Rajasthan. On February 22, 2024, the 87-kilometre Vadodara-Bharuch section in Gujarat was opened for traffic. Later, on June 5, 2026, the 36-kilometre Kim-Ena section and the 27.5-kilometre Gandeva-Ena section in Gujarat were inaugurated.

The opening of the Vadodara-Mumbai section is expected to substantially reduce traffic congestion on key routes across Maharashtra, including Thane, Bhiwandi, and Ghodbunder. A large number of vehicles are expected to shift to the expressway, resulting in considerable savings in both travel time and fuel consumption.

The project is also expected to provide a major boost to trade and industry by improving cargo movement to Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Better connectivity between industrial regions in northern and western India and Mumbai's port network is expected to enhance exports, attract fresh investments, and generate new employment opportunities.

The opening of the Vadodara-Mumbai section marks another significant step in the development of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, strengthening India's transport infrastructure while improving connectivity, logistics efficiency, economic growth, and regional mobility across multiple states.
