Married Couple Arrested After Viral Brake-Check Crash on Federal Highway in Malaysia; Motorcyclist Injured, Investigation Underway
A married couple in their 50s has been arrested following a viral dashcam video showing a reckless brake-check incident on Malaysia’s Federal Highway on June 20. One suspect was remanded while the other was released on bail. A motorcyclist was injured and hospitalized. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act.
Petaling Jaya Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat confirmed that the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division detained the couple at approximately 9 pm yesterday in relation to the June 20 incident involving a Perodua Kembara.
The case originated from widely circulated dashcam footage showing a reckless “brake-check” sequence on the Federal Highway towards Kuala Lumpur from Shah Alam at about 6 pm on June 20. In the video, the Kembara driver is seen repeatedly applying sudden brakes in front of another motorist, ultimately resulting in a collision. The driver then allegedly fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind.
The video spread rapidly across social media platforms, triggering public outrage and calls for immediate police intervention.
Following the arrest, the magistrate granted a four-day remand order for the first suspect from July 2 to July 5. The second suspect was released on police bail after their statement was recorded. Authorities confirmed that the investigation paper will be submitted to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office for further instructions.
The motorcyclist injured in the incident was transported to Sunway Hospital for medical treatment.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat reiterated that road users must comply with traffic laws, warning that police will continue to take strict action against offenders involved in dangerous driving behavior.
The incident has underscored growing concerns over aggressive driving and road safety compliance on major highways, as enforcement authorities intensify action against high-risk conduct on public roads.
