E20 Petrol Rollout Sparks Vehicle Owner Complaints Over Mileage Loss and Engine Wear Despite Government Support

India's nationwide E20 petrol rollout has achieved its implementation target ahead of schedule, aiming to reduce oil imports, support farmers, and lower emissions. However, owners of older vehicles report reduced mileage and engine component wear, while the government maintains that E20 is safe, effective, and fully compatible with vehicles manufactured since April 2023.

India's nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, which contains a blend of 20 percent ethanol and gasoline, has triggered growing concerns among vehicle owners over reduced fuel efficiency and possible engine wear, even as the government continues to defend the policy as a major step toward energy security, lower emissions, and support for farmers.

The E20 fuel programme achieved its 2025-26 implementation target ahead of schedule and is aimed at reducing the country's dependence on imported crude oil while saving billions in foreign exchange. The policy is also intended to strengthen the agricultural sector by increasing demand for ethanol production and to reduce vehicle emissions through the use of cleaner fuel.

However, many owners of vehicles manufactured before 2023, which were designed to operate on lower ethanol blends such as E10, have reported significant operational issues after switching to E20 petrol. According to a LocalCircles survey, numerous users experienced a decline of more than 10 percent in fuel mileage. The survey also highlighted complaints of corrosion affecting engine components, including seals and fuel injectors, raising concerns about the long-term impact of the higher ethanol blend on older vehicles.

Despite these complaints, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri have strongly defended the nationwide adoption of E20 petrol. They stated that countries such as Brazil and the United States have successfully implemented higher ethanol blends for years, demonstrating the viability of the fuel. The ministers also cited vehicle tests indicating improved acceleration with E20 fuel and emphasized that insurance coverage remains available for compatible vehicles.

The government further noted that all new vehicles manufactured since April 2023 have been built to meet E20 compatibility standards, ensuring they can operate safely and efficiently with the higher ethanol blend.

As India accelerates its transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transportation fuels, the nationwide adoption of E20 petrol represents a significant policy milestone. However, the concerns raised by owners of older vehicles over reduced mileage and potential component wear continue to fuel debate over the pace of implementation and the challenges of adapting the country's existing vehicle fleet to the new fuel standard.
