Air India Bangkok-Mumbai Flight Returns After Passenger Creates Mid-Air Ruckus
Air India flight AI 2338 from Bangkok to Mumbai returned to Suvarnabhumi Airport after an Indian passenger allegedly created a disturbance on board. A medical team took the passenger away before the flight resumed its journey.
A passenger travelling on the flight told Bhaskar that an Indian passenger was behaving unusually and creating a commotion inside the aircraft. Considering the situation, the pilot announced that the flight was being taken back to Bangkok.
After the aircraft landed, a medical team arrived at the airport and took the passenger away. However, details about the reason behind the passenger’s behaviour and his medical condition have not yet emerged.
The flight took off from Bangkok for Mumbai again 45 minutes after landing. Air India has not issued an official statement regarding the incident so far.
Depending on the nature of the passenger’s conduct, legal action may be taken against him. If a passenger refuses to follow crew instructions, threatens anyone or interferes with aircraft safety, the matter could become serious. In such circumstances, the pilot may also have to decide to return the aircraft to its departure airport.
The 1963 Tokyo Convention established an international framework for dealing with offences and acts that disrupt discipline aboard aircraft. The agreement defines the rights and responsibilities associated with criminal offences and disruptive incidents occurring inside an aircraft.
In a similar incident, a passenger travelling on an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Jaipur attempted to open the emergency exit gate on September 8. A crew member stopped the passenger, who was subsequently handed over to security agencies after the aircraft landed at Jaipur Airport.
The incident occurred on flight IX-196 and caused panic among passengers on board. The crew member managed to stop the passenger after considerable effort.
The latest incident involving Air India flight AI 2338 has once again drawn attention to disruptive passenger behaviour during air travel, with the circumstances behind the Bangkok-bound aircraft’s return and the passenger’s condition remaining unclear.
