Ishan Kishan Ruled Out of 2nd T20I Against New Zealand, Vaibhav Suryavanshi in Contention
Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of India's second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch due to a right adductor strain. With Vaibhav Suryavanshi in contention, India's playing XI and batting order are under scrutiny.
In its official statement, the BCCI said, “Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out of the second T20 International against New Zealand. He sustained an injury to the muscles of his right leg during the first T20I. Ishan has suffered a low-grade right adductor strain. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his injury and overseeing his recovery.”
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also provided an update on Kishan’s condition, explaining that his injury was the reason behind the change in the batting order during the first T20I. Kishan batted at No. 5 in that match, with Tilak Varma sent in ahead of him at No. 3.
What Did Batting Coach Sitanshu Kotak Say About Ishan Kishan?
Speaking at a press conference, Kotak acknowledged the speculation surrounding Kishan’s fitness and clarified the circumstances behind the batting-order adjustment.
“I have also seen a lot of speculation about this. Ishan had a groin strain, which is why the batting order was changed. His chances of playing in tomorrow’s match are also low. If Ishan does not play, Vaibhav is certainly among the strong contenders to replace him,” Kotak said.
Kishan’s injury has strengthened Suryavanshi’s chances of making it into India’s playing XI. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are the team’s regular openers, and the management is currently satisfied with the performances of both batters. If Suryavanshi is included in the playing XI, Samson could move down to No. 3.
Before the first T20I, captain Shreyas Iyer had indicated that Suryavanshi would need to wait for his opportunity. Iyer emphasised that the young batter had plenty of time to establish himself in the team.
“He is very young right now and has many years ahead of him to get opportunities. It is not as if he should be included in the team immediately, because both our openers are consistently scoring runs and have also won the World Cup,” Iyer had said.
Iyer also highlighted the importance of gaining experience in overseas conditions. According to him, playing in New Zealand would help Suryavanshi understand the pitches and conditions before future tours.
“Playing here will give him an opportunity to understand these pitches and conditions. The next time he comes here, he will be better prepared and will also be able to help other players who are experiencing these conditions for the first time,” Iyer said.
How Did India Perform in the First T20I?
During the first T20I against New Zealand, Tilak Varma was sent in at No. 3 ahead of Kishan. Varma scored six runs off 11 balls, while Kishan was dismissed after scoring one run off three deliveries. Michael Bracewell dismissed Varma, while Mitchell Santner sent Kishan back to the pavilion.
Despite these dismissals, India successfully chased down the target of 226 runs with four wickets to spare. The result gave India a winning start to the series, while Kishan’s injury has now created uncertainty over the team's batting combination for the second encounter.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s T20I Record and Recent Performances
Suryavanshi made a strong impression while representing Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), scoring 776 runs and demonstrating his batting ability.
He has also scored 246 runs in eight T20 International matches for India so far. His strike rate stands at 186.36, and he has registered two half-centuries.
Suryavanshi’s most recent international appearances came at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, where he played in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and the final against Pakistan. Following those matches, he was not included in the playing XI for India’s T20I series against the West Indies.
With Kishan unavailable for the second T20I, attention will be on whether the team management gives Suryavanshi an opportunity or retains its existing batting combination. The decision will determine whether the 15-year-old gets another chance to demonstrate his abilities at the international level.
