Maharashtra Plans Mega Chemical Park Near Vadhavan Port, Seeks Centre’s Approval
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a mega chemical park near Vadhavan Port in Palghar, offering 2,500–5,000 acres of land. The Centre’s approval and environmental clearances will determine the project’s next steps.
Fadnavis shared details of the proposal during the inauguration of the IndoChem programme held in Goregaon, Mumbai. He said the state government was prepared to make land available for the proposed chemical park and appealed to the Centre to grant approval to the project.
Located in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, Vadhavan Port is the proposed site for the chemical park, which aims to develop large-scale industrial infrastructure for chemical industries. However, detailed information regarding the project’s structure, investment requirements and construction timeline has not yet been disclosed.
The proposed location also raises environmental considerations. Dahanu tehsil in Palghar district had previously been identified as an ecologically sensitive area. Consequently, environmental regulations and the required clearances will play an important role in determining whether and how the chemical park can be established.
Union Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister JP Nadda also addressed the programme, outlining the central government’s ‘Bhawya Rasayan’ scheme, which was announced in the Union Budget. Under the scheme, the central government will contribute Rs 1,000 crore, while the state government will provide Rs 500 crore.
Nadda also stated that the central government would assist in the process of obtaining environmental clearances under the scheme. The proposed support is intended to facilitate the development process, although the mega chemical park near Vadhavan Port still requires the necessary approvals before the project can proceed.
The development of Vadhavan Port is being undertaken through a special purpose vehicle formed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board. If the proposed chemical park receives approval, it could open up further possibilities for industrial expansion in Maharashtra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Vadhavan Port project on August 30, 2024. Once completed, the port is expected to significantly increase India’s cargo-handling capacity and is projected to become one of the world’s top 10 container ports.
The proposed mega chemical park would add another potential industrial development to the Vadhavan Port area. Its progress will depend on the Centre’s approval, the final allocation of land and the completion of the required environmental procedures.
