Mumbai Heat Alert: Temperatures Cross 37°C as El Niño Raises Winter Concerns

Mumbai recorded temperatures above 37°C as hot and humid conditions continued, while El Niño could intensify by November. Pune may see delayed winter conditions, with Maharashtra likely to experience above-average temperatures.

Mumbai has been witnessing a fresh rise in temperatures over the past two days, with hot and humid conditions forecast to continue on Friday. Maximum temperatures at Santacruz and Colaba crossed 37 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the developing El Niño system is raising concerns about above-average temperatures across Maharashtra and delayed winter conditions in Pune.

Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius at Santacruz and 37.5 degrees Celsius at Colaba on Thursday. The maximum temperature at Colaba was 4 degrees Celsius above the average, while Santacruz recorded a reading 3.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

No Relief from Rising Temperatures in Mumbai

Temperatures remain elevated due to winds blowing from the northeast to the eastern belt. Winds from the sea are arriving late, limiting relief from the heat. Mumbai was also under a hot and humid weather warning on Thursday. However, a slight decline in humidity reduced the intensity of the discomfort.

The sky is likely to remain clear on Friday, potentially intensifying the heat. The Regional Meteorological Department has forecast maximum temperatures of between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius from Saturday, October 24, to October 28. However, no warning for the subsequent days had been issued on Thursday.

El Niño Could Intensify Towards the End of 2026

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has forecast that the developing El Niño system this year could be more intense than any event observed over the past four decades.

Between November 2026 and January 2027, surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean could remain 3.8 degrees Celsius above average. This condition is expected to have far-reaching effects on temperatures and rainfall patterns worldwide. The influence of El Niño could also persist for an extended period, even after the phenomenon reaches its peak intensity.

The WMO shared this information in a press release issued on Wednesday.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said the effects of El Niño are likely to be strongest towards the end of this year. She noted that the intensity figures could exceed the range covered by observations and measurements used over the past four decades.

Against this backdrop, she urged governments and humanitarian organisations in different countries to coordinate and implement measures immediately to minimise the impact of potential disasters.

El Niño Raises Flood and Drought Risks Across Regions

Parts of East Africa could receive above-average rainfall during the October-to-December rainy season, increasing the risk of flooding.

Southern Africa, meanwhile, could experience rainfall shortages from November. This could affect crop production, water availability and local livelihoods.

In Southeast Asia, higher temperatures and a rainfall deficit could increase heat stress and put additional pressure on agriculture and water supplies. The risk of forest fires and smoky conditions could also rise.

Some parts of the United States could experience heavier rainfall, while drought risks have been identified in parts of Central America, the southern Caribbean and the Amazon Basin.

The WMO has clarified that not every weather-related disaster caused by El Niño will necessarily develop into a humanitarian crisis. However, effective use of weather science, forecasts and early-warning systems can help prevent loss of life and protect livelihoods.

Pune Experiences Morning Chill but Afternoon Heat Persists

In Pune, daytime heat and intense sunshine continue, although central Pune and its suburbs experienced cooler conditions until 8 am for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

The change in weather prompted discussions among residents about whether winter was approaching. However, temperatures rose around noon, disappointing those hoping for sustained relief from the heat.

The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 18.5 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was lower than Wednesday's reading. The NDA area recorded a minimum temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius, while the Haveli area registered 17.3 degrees Celsius.

The intensity of the sunshine increased after 11 am, and people walking on the roads experienced scorching heat during the afternoon. Humidity-related discomfort also increased.

Similar conditions prevail across Pune district. The retreating monsoon has also failed to provide relief, resulting in significant crop losses for farmers.

Winter May Remain Delayed in Pune Amid Rising El Niño Intensity

With only a week remaining before October ends, residents are beginning to look forward to the arrival of winter. However, meteorologists have indicated that El Niño is likely to intensify further in November, potentially keeping temperatures across Maharashtra above average.

According to meteorologists, Pune is unlikely to experience winter conditions until the end of next month.

The India Meteorological Department has also forecast a slight rise in maximum temperatures over the next four days, with partly cloudy skies expected.

With Mumbai continuing to experience temperatures above 37 degrees Celsius and Pune recording intense afternoon heat despite cooler mornings, the developing El Niño system and its potential influence on regional temperatures remain a significant weather concern heading into November.
