Mumbai Infrastructure Push: Fadnavis Opens 3 Flyovers to Cut Travel Time to 60 Minutes
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurates three flyovers in Mumbai, including bridges at Sion and Vidyavihar and a 1.26-km GMLR flyover, as the city targets 50–60-minute cross-city travel.
Fadnavis made the statement after virtually inaugurating three new flyovers in the city. The projects include railway overbridges at Sion in the island city and Vidyavihar in the eastern suburbs, along with a flyover on the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) in the western suburbs.
“Our plan to enable people to travel from one part of Mumbai to another within 50 to 60 minutes will receive significant support from these infrastructure projects,” Fadnavis said. He added that the projects would improve traffic flow and make commuting easier for residents.
The three projects are expected to strengthen connectivity across different parts of Mumbai and reduce travel time on key routes.
The Sion Railway Overbridge has been reconstructed after the demolition of a 112-year-old British-era structure. The bridge was declared unsafe in 2019, necessitating its replacement.
In the eastern part of Mumbai, the Vidyavihar bridge connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the western part of the area. The project is expected to reduce travel time between the two sides from approximately 30 minutes to 10 minutes.
The third flyover has been constructed under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project. Located in Goregaon East, the flyover measures 1.26 kilometres in length.
The inauguration of the three flyovers marks a step in Mumbai’s infrastructure development, with the projects aimed at improving cross-city connectivity, easing traffic movement and supporting the broader goal of reducing travel time to 50–60 minutes.
