IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Mumbai as Hot, Humid Weather and Rain Threat Loom
IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts, forecasting hot and humid conditions from October 22 to 26, 2026. Rain and thundershowers are also likely in parts of Konkan and Kolhapur.
According to a weather bulletin issued on Thursday afternoon by the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Colaba, Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are likely to experience hot and humid weather during the initial part of the forecast period.
The forecast also indicates the possibility of light rain and thundershowers in parts of the Konkan region and Kolhapur district on specified days. Most other parts of Maharashtra, including Nashik, Pune, Jalgaon, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and several districts in Vidarbha, are expected to remain dry, with no active weather warnings indicated in the report.
Konkan Districts Likely to Witness Thundershowers
While isolated pockets of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad are likely to experience hot and humid conditions during the initial part of the forecast period, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg may receive light rain or thundershowers, particularly during the afternoon and evening on specified days.
Kolhapur and its ghat sections are also likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers early in the forecast period. Weather conditions are expected to become predominantly dry across Maharashtra towards the weekend.
The IMD’s district-wise forecast covers the period from October 22 to October 26, 2026, outlining the expected weather conditions across the state.
IMD Highlights Potential Weather-Related Risks
The weather department has outlined potential risks associated with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in areas where such conditions occur.
Localised flooding and waterlogging could affect low-lying and urban areas, while water flowing over roads and bridges may disrupt transport. Temporary interruptions to road, rail and air services, localised power outages and cloud-to-ground lightning are also among the possible impacts.
Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph could uproot weak trees and damage poorly maintained structures, including kutcha houses and walls.
Unseasonal rainfall and waterlogging could also affect standing crops, plantations and horticultural produce, raising concerns for agricultural activities in areas experiencing adverse weather.
IMD Advises Residents to Take Precautions
The IMD has advised residents to check traffic conditions and follow local transport advisories before travelling.
During thunderstorms, people should avoid open fields and refrain from taking shelter under tall trees. They should also stay away from vulnerable structures, unplug electrical and electronic appliances where it is safe to do so, and move away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity.
Residents have been advised to remain alert to local weather updates, particularly in areas likely to experience thunderstorms or gusty winds. The precautions are intended to help minimise exposure to weather-related risks during the forecast period.
Farmers Advised to Protect Crops and Livestock
The weather department has advised farmers to harvest mature crops promptly and store the produce in safe, covered locations to protect it from moisture.
Farmers have also been advised to provide physical support to young fruit plants and vegetable crops to prevent damage from gusty winds. Proper drainage should be maintained in agricultural fields to remove excess rainwater.
The IMD has further advised farmers to avoid irrigation and chemical spraying during unsuitable weather conditions and ensure that farm animals are kept safely inside sheds during lightning events.
With the forecast indicating hot and humid conditions in parts of the Mumbai metropolitan region, the possibility of thundershowers in sections of Konkan and Kolhapur, and potential weather-related risks, residents and farmers have been advised to follow local updates and take the recommended precautions throughout the October 22–26 forecast period.
