The artistic gymnastics event marks another important stage in India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 journey, with the four-member team aiming to make a strong impact in the competition. Their performance will determine progress in both the team final and individual qualification categories.
India had already made an impressive start to the Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign on Thursday with two victories in bowls. The biggest highlight came from Commonwealth Games debutant Putul Sonowal, who produced one of the opening day’s biggest upsets by defeating reigning world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the men’s singles Section D.
The victory placed Sonowal in a strong position in Section D, where only the group winner will advance to the semi-finals. He will return to the green later on Thursday to face Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands, aiming to continue his remarkable beginning to the tournament.
India also recorded a winning start in the women’s pairs event, where Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey opened their campaign with a victory.
Meanwhile, boxer Lovlina Borgohain secured India’s first medal opportunity after receiving a bye in the quarter-finals of the boxing draw. The Indian boxer will now begin her campaign directly from the semi-finals.
Boxing at the Commonwealth Games awards two bronze medals in each weight category, with one medal going to each losing semi-finalist. As a result, any boxer reaching the final four is guaranteed a podium finish, even in the event of a semi-final defeat.
With strong performances already recorded in bowls and boxing, and the artistic gymnastics team now entering competition, India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign has gained early momentum across multiple sporting disciplines.
