India Launches First Hydrogen Train on Jind-Sonipat Route, Advancing Clean Energy Rail Transport
India launches its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route, operating an 89-kilometre stretch under Northern Railway’s Delhi Division. Powered by a homegrown 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system emitting only water vapour, the train marks a major step towards clean energy transport, net-zero rail goals, and India’s Make in India initiative.
The train can carry up to 2,600 passengers and operates at a speed of 75 kilometres per hour. It is powered by an indigenous 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell system, which produces only water vapour as an emission, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuel-based trains.
Students from local schools, including Indus Public School in Jind, were among the first passengers to experience the hydrogen-powered train journey. The students expressed excitement while travelling on the clean energy-powered service, which represents a new chapter in India’s railway innovation.
A misleading video circulating online falsely claimed that the hydrogen train was targeted in a stone-pelting sabotage incident. Northern Railway clarified that the footage was unrelated to the hydrogen train and actually showed an incident involving a freight locomotive in Bihar that had occurred a month earlier. The railway authorities confirmed that the hydrogen train service continues to operate smoothly without disruption.
The project reflects India’s commitment to the “Make in India” initiative and its broader vision of reducing carbon emissions in transportation. With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany and France that have introduced hydrogen-powered rail technology, strengthening global efforts towards cleaner and more sustainable railway systems.
