Modi Announces Fast-Track Courts for NEET Paper Leak Cases Amid Mounting Protests and Political Pressure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced fast-track courts for examination paper leak cases following the NEET-UG 2026 controversy that affected more than two million medical aspirants and was linked to at least 11 suicides. The move comes amid sustained protests, ongoing Central Bureau of Investigation inquiries, political criticism, and growing demands for accountability and examination reforms.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced the establishment of fast-track courts to expedite the trial and punishment of those involved in examination paper leak cases, responding to nationwide outrage over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The controversy has affected more than two million medical aspirants and has been linked to at least 11 reported suicides, intensifying demands for accountability and comprehensive examination reforms.

The announcement comes as the Cockroach Janta Party, a youth group that has been camping at Jantar Mantar since late June, continues its protest against the alleged failures surrounding the examination process. The group has demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, financial compensation for the families of the deceased, and sweeping reforms to prevent future examination leaks. The ongoing demonstrations have also witnessed clashes with police, leaving both police personnel and protesters injured.

The Bharatiya Janata Party welcomed the Prime Minister's decision, describing the creation of fast-track courts as a significant milestone in ensuring swift justice against those responsible for examination fraud. Party leaders also highlighted the ongoing investigations being conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation, stating that the agency is pursuing the matter to identify and prosecute all those involved in the alleged paper leak.

The announcement, however, failed to satisfy the opposition. Senior opposition leader Rahul Gandhi described the measure as inadequate, insisting that merely establishing fast-track courts would not address the broader issue of accountability. He reiterated his demand for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and called for a deeper investigation to determine responsibility at every level.

The decision to establish fast-track courts marks the government's latest response to one of the country's most significant examination controversies. As investigations continue and political divisions deepen, the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak remains at the center of a national debate over examination integrity, institutional accountability, and the future of competitive recruitment and admission processes.
