India Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Train, Begins New Era of Green Rail Transport

India launches its first hydrogen-powered train as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flags off the green rail initiative on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The indigenous technology-based train offers affordable fares, advanced safety systems, hydrogen fuel cell propulsion and marks India’s entry into sustainable railway transportation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, July 17, flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable public transportation. Developed with indigenous technology, the hydrogen-powered passenger train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway in Haryana, placing India among a select group of countries that have introduced hydrogen-based rail services.

The newly launched train is expected to transform the future of rail travel by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting environmentally friendly transportation solutions. The service has attracted attention for its affordable fares, operational route, advanced technology and sustainability features.

According to railway officials, the ticket fare for the hydrogen-powered train starts at Rs 5, while the maximum fare is Rs 25, depending on the distance travelled. Passengers who travelled on the inaugural service also purchased tickets priced at Rs 5.

The train will operate between Jind Junction and Sonipat, covering several stations along the route, including Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Khera Halt, Bhambhewa, Isapur Kheri Halt, Butana Halt, Khandrai Halt, Rabrah Halt, Lath, Mohana, Barwasni Halt and Sonipat.

As per the official release, the hydrogen-powered train has been approved to operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph, while its design speed is 110 kmph.

Unlike conventional trains that depend on diesel engines or electricity supplied through overhead lines, the new train generates electricity onboard through hydrogen fuel cells. In this process, hydrogen combines with oxygen to produce electricity, with water vapour and heat being the only by-products, making it a cleaner alternative for railway operations.

The train features a 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell-based trainset, consisting of two hydrogen-powered Driving Power Cars and eight trailer coaches. It is equipped with a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and has a passenger capacity of around 2,600 people. The train also includes multiple safety systems designed to detect hydrogen leaks, smoke, flames and overheating.

The launch is part of Indian Railways’ broader initiative to develop cleaner and more sustainable transportation infrastructure. The project has also resulted in the creation of India’s largest railway hydrogen storage and refuelling facility at Jind, with a storage capacity of nearly 3,000 kg of hydrogen.

According to the government, the hydrogen facility has been developed in accordance with internationally accepted safety standards and has undergone independent safety assessments to ensure secure operations.

With the introduction of this hydrogen-powered passenger train, India has joined countries including Germany, Japan, China and the United States that have adopted hydrogen rail technology. The launch represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions, encouraging green mobility and building a more sustainable future for the country’s railway network.
