Delhi High Court Orders Daily Medical Monitoring of Sonam Wangchuk During Hunger Strike, Centre Assures Immediate Treatment if Needed

Delhi High Court directs daily medical monitoring of social activist Sonam Wangchuk during his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. The Centre assures immediate medical assistance if required as Wangchuk’s health continues to decline, with a weight loss of 9 kilograms since the protest began on June 28.

The Delhi High Court on Thursday, July 16, made a significant observation regarding the deteriorating health condition of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The court stated that every citizen’s life is valuable and directed that his health condition must be continuously monitored. The Central Government assured the court that immediate medical assistance would be provided to Wangchuk whenever required, based on the advice of government doctors.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia, during the hearing, directed that Sonam Wangchuk should undergo medical examination every day. The court stated that if doctors find any requirement for treatment or medical intervention, the administration must take immediate action. The bench appreciated the Central Government’s assurance and disposed of the public interest litigation after recording the commitment.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Central Government, informed the court that government doctors were already regularly monitoring Sonam Wangchuk’s health. He stated that any treatment considered necessary by the medical team would be provided without delay. The court recorded the assurance and emphasized that the administration must take prompt steps in case of any health emergency.

The matter reached the Delhi High Court following a public interest litigation seeking protection of Wangchuk’s life and health. The petition requested that he be admitted to a hospital if necessary and provided with essential nutrition to prevent further deterioration of his condition. However, the court did not issue any separate order on hospitalization or nutrition and focused on ensuring regular medical monitoring.

His protest has continued over the demand, while his health condition has gradually weakened. His current weight has reduced to 56.65 kilograms, marking a total weight loss of 9 kilograms so far.

The Delhi High Court’s intervention has highlighted the importance of ensuring medical safety during prolonged hunger strikes. With the administration assuring immediate medical support whenever required, attention remains focused on Wangchuk’s health condition and the continuation of his protest at Jantar Mantar.
