Madras High Court Cancels Illegal Sale of Palani Temple Land, Orders Action Against Officials
The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has cancelled the illegal July 6 registration of Palani Temple's Adi Varu Mutt land after it was allegedly sold using forged documents for ₹2 crore. A sub-registrar has been suspended, criminal investigations have begun, and the ruling has intensified political debate over procedural lapses, temple property protection, and anti-corruption measures.
The court invalidated the land registration carried out on July 6 after finding that the temple property had been sold to two individuals for only ₹2 crore through allegedly forged documents, despite prior notices issued by the court. The ruling effectively nullifies the disputed transaction and reinforces judicial oversight over the protection of religious institution assets.
The case also revealed serious administrative lapses during the registration process. The sub-registrar, who had been posted to the office for only one day, allegedly ignored the temple administration's prior alert regarding the disputed property and proceeded with the registration. Following the developments, the official has been suspended, while criminal investigations have been initiated against all those allegedly involved in the transaction.
Reacting to the court's decision, HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh credited Chief Minister Vijay's leadership for ensuring the protection of temple assets and supporting measures to safeguard religious properties from illegal transfers. At the same time, the incident has drawn criticism from the opposition, which questioned the procedural failures that allowed the registration to take place and linked the controversy to broader efforts aimed at curbing corruption.
The High Court's decision marks a significant development in the protection of temple properties, underscoring judicial scrutiny of alleged document fraud, administrative accountability, and ongoing efforts to prevent the illegal transfer of religious institution assets.
