IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has launched an extensive food safety crackdown in Maharashtra since becoming Food and Drug Administration Commissioner on May 25, 2026. Maharashtra's food safety enforcement has witnessed an unprecedented crackdown under IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, who assumed charge as the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration on May 25, 2026. Since taking office, Mundhe has spearheaded an aggressive statewide campaign against food adulteration and hygiene violations, resulting in 235 First Information Reports, the sealing of 274 establishments, and the exposure of a massive synthetic milk racket in Dharashiv.

The enforcement drive uncovered a large-scale operation producing synthetic milk by using detergent, edible oil, and various chemicals. Authorities found that more than 2.3 crore liters of adulterated milk, valued at approximately Rs 9.21 crore, had been contaminated through these illegal practices, making it one of the most significant food adulteration cases uncovered during the campaign.

The Food and Drug Administration also initiated strict action against several well-known establishments for failing to comply with hygiene and food safety standards. Among those facing suspension were K. Rustom & Co., Shalimar Hospitality, and other businesses found to have serious sanitation deficiencies during inspections.

The crackdown extended to religious destinations as well, where authorities acted after receiving complaints from devotees regarding the quality of sweets sold in Shirdi. Substandard peda was destroyed following inspections that confirmed quality concerns, reflecting the administration's commitment to protecting consumers regardless of location or establishment.

The extensive enforcement campaign has reportedly led to a decline in milk supplies from operators allegedly involved in adulteration, as many feared strict legal action. At the same time, the drive has attracted public appreciation for its decisive enforcement. However, critics have also questioned why similar large-scale action had not been taken in the past despite longstanding concerns over food adulteration.
