Indian-Origin Golf Trio Eyes Historic Open Championship Glory as Royal Birkdale Hosts 154th Edition

The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale highlights the rise of Indian-origin golfers Aaron Rai, Sahith Theegala, and Akshay Bhatia. After impressive Major performances, the trio enters the tournament as strong contenders for the iconic Claret Jug, marking a new chapter in international golf history.

Southport: The Majors remain the ultimate benchmark for measuring a golfer’s career, and the 154th Open Championship begins with renewed challenges at Royal Birkdale on the windswept shores of Merseyside. As the iconic course prepares to crown another champion, a remarkable international golf narrative is emerging, led by a new generation of players with roots tracing back to India.

Two months ago, Aaron Rai captured global attention by securing a Major victory at the PGA Championship. Just weeks later, Rai was joined by Sahith Theegala and Akshay Bhatia as the trio made headlines with top-20 finishes at the US Open. Their performances have highlighted the rise of a Next-Gen group of golfers connected to Indian heritage, and the possibility of one of them lifting the prestigious Claret Jug no longer appears beyond reach.

Akshay Bhatia, 24, has already established himself as a rising force with three PGA Tour victories. Sahith Theegala, 28, has claimed one PGA Tour title and has repeatedly challenged among the leading contenders, including a third-place finish at the 2024 Tour Championship.

Aaron Rai’s journey to the highest level of professional golf has been built through consistent progress. He advanced through the Challenge Tour, where he won three times to earn a battlefield promotion to the DP World Tour, before reaching the PGA Tour through the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Finals. Rai secured his first PGA Tour victory in 2024 and, in 2026, became the first Englishman since 1919 to win the PGA Championship.

The Hero-backed Theegala has earned recognition for his creativity, exceptional short game, and ability to handle pressure. At the US Open, he demonstrated strong resilience by recovering from early setbacks to finish tied for 11th alongside Rai. His aggressive approach from the tee could present challenges at Royal Birkdale, where narrow fairways and hazards demand precision, but his skill set makes him a potential top-10 contender if he maintains control.
