According to sources, several infiltration attempts have been made since Operation Sindoor, but all such efforts were foiled by Indian security forces. Strengthened border surveillance and security arrangements have significantly reduced the chances of terrorists entering India through traditional land routes. Intelligence officials have stated that the strategy of using waterways is not new. During the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, 10 LeT terrorists had reached India through the sea route. However, this time, the organisation’s reported focus is to increase the number of active terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per intelligence inputs, the Chenab and Tawi rivers in the Jammu sector are among the areas being monitored as possible infiltration routes. The Akhnoor sector has been identified as particularly sensitive due to its dense forests, rivers, and water bodies, which have previously been exploited for infiltration attempts. Terrorists may attempt to cross the international border under the cover of fog and darkness. If successful, such routes could help them reactivate their networks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Apart from Jammu, the Sir Creek and Harami Nala regions connected to Gujarat are also being examined as potential infiltration points. Due to the challenges involved in maintaining regular patrols in these areas, security agencies believe terrorists may attempt to exploit these locations. Officials suspect that if terrorists manage to enter Gujarat, efforts could be made to transport them towards Jammu and Kashmir through road networks.
Sources have claimed that Lashkar-e-Taiba’s objective is to establish a network of 50 to 100 active Pakistani terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. To achieve this, potential infiltrators are reportedly being provided extensive maritime training. The training is believed to be taking place in Pakistan’s Mangla Dam region, where terrorists involved in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks were also trained.
However, security agencies have maintained that executing such a plan would not be easy. The Ministry of Home Affairs has already stated that vigilance along international borders has been increased through the deployment of speedboats, watercraft, floating border outposts, advanced surveillance equipment, and day-and-night monitoring systems.
Officials believe that amid growing instability within Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lashkar-e-Taiba may attempt to reactivate its network in Jammu and Kashmir through a major terrorist operation and divert international attention. The latest intelligence inputs highlight continued efforts by Pakistan-based terror groups to explore alternative infiltration methods despite intensified security measures along India’s borders.
