Karnataka Announces India’s First Government-Driven AI University and AI Hub to Strengthen Global Technology Leadership

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that India’s first government-driven Artificial Intelligence University and a dedicated AI Hub will be established in the state. The initiatives aim to develop world-class AI talent, strengthen research, promote innovation, and position Karnataka as a global leader in responsible artificial intelligence and technology-driven governance.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar today announced that India’s first government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) University will be established in the state, marking a major step toward strengthening the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. He also announced that the government will set up an AI Hub as an incubation centre for research and development in artificial intelligence by start-ups, companies, and other stakeholders.

The Chief Minister made the announcements while inaugurating Google Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru. He said the proposed AI University would play a pivotal role in developing world-class artificial intelligence talent, advancing research, and strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, and government. According to him, the institution will support Karnataka’s ambition of becoming a global leader in responsible artificial intelligence innovation.

Addressing technology leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, developers, researchers, and policymakers from across India and around the world, D.K. Shivakumar highlighted Karnataka’s strong position in the technology sector. He said the state currently contributes nearly 40 per cent of India’s software exports, while Bengaluru is home to more than 17,000 start-ups and thousands of Global Capability Centres that design and engineer products for international markets.

The Chief Minister said Karnataka’s foremost ambition is to become an AI-native state where artificial intelligence is used responsibly to improve governance and enhance the everyday lives of citizens rather than remaining only a technological tool. He emphasized that the proposed AI University and AI Hub will strengthen research, innovation, and collaboration, further reinforcing Karnataka’s position as a leading destination for artificial intelligence development and technological advancement.
