India Ships First Consignment of Areko Cherries and Scentrose Plums from Jammu and Kashmir to UAE
India has exported its first consignment of Areko cherries and Scentrose plums from Jammu and Kashmir to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, marking a major horticultural export milestone. The shipment sourced from Shopian and Pulwama farmers highlights India’s growing premium fruit export potential and efforts to improve farmer incomes through global market access.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) announced the development on 6 July, stating that the export reflects India’s growing capabilities in supplying high-quality fresh fruits to international markets. The initiative is expected to help farmers gain wider market access, secure better returns, and showcase the quality of Indian horticultural products globally.
According to a report by the Times of Oman, the consignment contained one tonne of fruits sourced from farmers in Shopian and Pulwama districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The shipment was exported to Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev said that Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as an important centre for premium horticultural production with significant export potential.
He added that APEDA remains committed to supporting farmers through export promotion initiatives, quality improvement measures, and global buyer engagement programmes. The authority aims to strengthen market access opportunities and enhance the income potential of growers through improved price realisation.
The export of Areko cherries and Scentrose plums to the United Arab Emirates highlights the increasing international demand for India’s premium fruits. The development opens new opportunities for farmers in Jammu and Kashmir while strengthening India’s position in the global fresh fruit export market.
