Sanju Samson Dropped from India T20I Squad for Zimbabwe Series as Shreyas Iyer Takes Charge
Sanju Samson has been dropped from India's T20I squad for the three-match Zimbabwe series following a string of disappointing performances. Shreyas Iyer will lead the side, while young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi retains his place and Rajasthan pacer Ashok Sharma receives his maiden senior India call-up. India's ODI squad has also been announced with Shivam Dube replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Teenage opening batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has retained his place in the squad after recently making his international debut. Rajasthan fast bowler Ashok Sharma has earned his maiden call-up to the senior India squad after impressive performances in domestic cricket. The pacer had earlier been included in the India A squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka and has now been rewarded with his first selection for the senior national T20I team.
Samson's exclusion comes after a disappointing sequence of performances in international cricket. He was dropped from India's playing XI for the second T20I against England after managing just one run from seven deliveries in the opening match of the series. Before that, he endured another difficult outing against Ireland, scoring 0 and 5 in the two T20Is. Despite being regarded as one of India's key players in the shortest format and playing a significant role in India's recent T20 World Cup-winning campaign, his continued lack of runs has resulted in his omission from the Zimbabwe tour.
The T20I squad for the Zimbabwe series includes Shreyas Iyer as captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma as vice-captain, Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeper, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Varun Chakaravarthy, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, Mayank Yadav and Prabhsimran Singh as wicketkeeper.
The Men's Selection Committee also announced India's One-Day International squad, naming Shivam Dube as the replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy.
The ODI squad features Shubman Gill as captain, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer as vice-captain, KL Rahul as wicketkeeper, Ishan Kishan as wicketkeeper, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Shivam Dube.
Samson's omission marks one of the biggest selection decisions ahead of India's Zimbabwe tour, while the inclusion of emerging players such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ashok Sharma reflects the selectors' emphasis on rewarding recent performances and strengthening the team's depth ahead of future international assignments.
