The Government of India introduced the nationwide E20 fuel mandate to reduce annual oil imports by 6 billion liters, support farmers through increased ethanol production, and lower carbon emissions. However, petrol dealers in Odisha say they are receiving a rising number of complaints from customers who claim their vehicles have developed performance issues after switching to E20 fuel.
According to petrol dealers, several owners of Bharat Stage VI vehicles that were not originally designed for higher ethanol blends have reported operational concerns. A LocalCircles survey found that 66 percent of vehicle owners with models manufactured before 2023 experienced mileage reductions exceeding 10 percent and incurred repair expenses after using E20 petrol.
Oil marketing companies and automobile manufacturers have rejected concerns over the fuel's compatibility, stating that extensive testing has confirmed E20 petrol is suitable for approved vehicles. They have also pointed to international examples, including Brazil's widespread use of E27 fuel, as evidence that higher ethanol blends can be successfully adopted.
Despite these assurances, activists have demanded the continued availability of E10 petrol, greater public disclosure of performance reports, and effective measures to address vehicle-related complaints. They argue that India's transition toward cleaner energy must balance national energy security objectives with the practical challenges experienced by vehicle owners.
The dispute highlights the growing debate over India's nationwide E20 fuel policy, as authorities pursue ambitious energy, agricultural, and environmental goals while consumers and fuel dealers continue to raise concerns about its impact on existing vehicles.
