Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and resigned from the cabinet of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru over differences regarding policies related to Jammu and Kashmir. He later entered the region without a permit to press for its complete integration with the rest of the country and was subsequently taken into custody, where he died in 1953.
Leaders across the political spectrum joined the commemorations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid homage to Dr. Mookerjee and highlighted his opposition to the existence of separate constitutional and symbolic arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir. They recalled his campaign against the idea of separate constitutions, separate heads of administration and separate flags.
The leaders also linked the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 with what they described as the fulfillment of Dr. Mookerjee's vision of national unity and complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
The observance of the 73rd anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee's death once again brought attention to his political legacy and his role in shaping debates surrounding national integration, making the occasion a significant moment of remembrance and reflection across the country.
