Chandrima Bhattacharya Resigns From All Trinamool Congress Posts as Internal Crisis Deepens
Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya has resigned from all party posts as the party faces an escalating internal crisis. The development follows the party's organizational split, restructuring after Assembly election losses, and the defection of 20 Lok Sabha Members of Parliament to the National Citizens' Party of India in support of the National Democratic Alliance government.
Chandrima Bhattacharya, considered a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, was appointed president of the party's West Bengal unit after the Trinamool Congress suffered heavy losses in the state Assembly elections held in May. Following the electoral defeat, Mamata Banerjee dissolved all existing party committees and carried out a major restructuring of the party organization in an effort to revive its political standing.
The internal turmoil has since escalated, with the Trinamool Congress splitting into two factions led by Mamata Banerjee and Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee in the West Bengal Assembly.
The political upheaval has further intensified after 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha Members of Parliament merged with the little-known National Citizens' Party of India and pledged their support to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre.
Chandrima Bhattacharya's resignation, coupled with the party's organizational split and the large-scale defection of Members of Parliament, underscores the deepening crisis within the Trinamool Congress and signals a significant shift in West Bengal's political landscape.
