The relief effort follows a fatal road incident in June in Dubai, where a minibus carrying workers collided with a stationary truck. The crash claimed seven lives and left nine others injured. The deceased included six Indian nationals and one Sri Lankan worker, all identified as migrant workers employed in the UAE.
Representatives from Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil’s office personally visited the families of the deceased workers across rural regions of Telangana and Uttar Pradesh, offering condolences and formally handing over financial assistance. A separate visit was also made to the family of the deceased Sri Lankan worker in Mullaitivu district.
Under the humanitarian recovery programme, each deceased worker’s family is receiving Rs. 26 lakh in compensation. Additional educational assistance for children from the affected families is also under evaluation and will be coordinated directly with their respective households.
In Telangana, the three deceased workers were Saleem Sayyed Hussain from Namilikonda in Jagitial district, Abdul Rafiq Abdul Raheem from Kaddam in Nirmal district, and Thirupathi Gollapally Chandraiah from Thakkallapalle in Jagitial district. Families described their aspirations for overseas employment and the financial responsibilities they had undertaken to support their children’s education and household needs.
In Uttar Pradesh, visits were conducted in Mau and Bijnor districts for the families of Abdul Rasheed Zakir Husain, Markandey Chauhan Bhajjan Chauhan, and Mohammad Saqib Liyaqat Ali. In Khurahat, Mau district, Markandey’s family recalled his long employment history in the Gulf region and his aspirations for his children’s future. During the visit, Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil interacted with the family via video call, assuring support for the higher education of his daughter, who expressed her intention to pursue Bachelor of Science in Nursing, along with potential future employment opportunities in the UAE.
At Kopaganj in Mau district, the family of Abdul Rasheed Zakir Husain stated that he had departed for Dubai two months prior to the incident with hopes of improving the family’s living conditions and education prospects for his children. In Bijnor district, Mohammad Saqib Liyaqat Ali was remembered by his family as a committed worker who left for Dubai for the first time to support his mother and sisters.
The Sri Lankan victim, Samuvel Rengasami, aged 34, from Mullaitivu district, was described as the sole breadwinner of his family. He is survived by his wife and a young daughter.
Financial assistance has also been extended to nine injured survivors in coordination with the employer. Among them, eight are Indian nationals, including three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Rajasthan, and one each from Kerala, Telangana, and Bihar, while one injured worker is a Nepali national. Four injured individuals received assistance in the UAE, three received funds in India through direct transfer, and two critically injured workers continue to receive treatment in a Dubai hospital while also receiving financial support.
The relief initiative underscores a coordinated humanitarian response across borders, addressing both immediate financial distress and long-term rehabilitation needs of affected families, while highlighting structured assistance for education and recovery in the aftermath of a major industrial transport tragedy.
