Mumbai Police Foil Alleged Mass Poisoning Plot Targeting Muharram Procession; Nearly 15,000 Toxic Capsules Seized
Mumbai Police have reportedly foiled a major alleged conspiracy to target a Muharram procession by seizing nearly 14,900 capsules containing zinc phosphide. One suspect has been arrested, and investigations reveal plans involving toxic substance distribution that could have endangered thousands of lives in a crowded religious gathering.
According to police officials, nearly 15,000 capsules were recovered before they could be distributed, preventing what investigators described as a potentially catastrophic incident.
DCP (Central Region, Zone 1) Jayant Meena informed the media that the accused was taken into custody after police received intelligence during the Muharram procession regarding a man distributing items that appeared to be medicinal capsules. Subsequent verification led to the seizure of approximately 14,900 capsules allegedly filled with zinc phosphide. Officials confirmed that the capsules had not yet been circulated among the public, allowing law enforcement agencies to intervene in time.
Investigators further revealed that one individual identified as Salman Saiyed reportedly fell ill after consuming one of the capsules, which triggered heightened scrutiny and accelerated the investigation.
The accused has been identified as Faiyaz Premji, a resident of Viman Nagar in Pune. Police stated that he holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and operates a paint business. Authorities also noted that he had been residing in rented accommodation in Dongri, Mumbai, for the past 15 days. During the investigation, officials discovered that he had travelled to Iran and Iraq in 2025, and the purpose of these visits is currently under verification.
Police further alleged that the accused had procured approximately 50 kilograms of zinc phosphide and intended to fill capsules with about one gram of the toxic substance each. Investigators believe the alleged objective was to target participants in the Muharram procession, where nearly 30,000 people had gathered, raising the potential scale of harm significantly.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the accused’s background, travel history, and possible wider connections linked to the alleged plot.
