Amit Shah Launches Bharat Taxi Across 14 Cities in Gujarat, Announces Expansion to 500 Cities in Two Years
Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi across 14 cities in Gujarat, announcing expansion to 500 cities in two years. The driver-owned cooperative ride-hailing model operates on zero commission, empowering Saarthis. The event in Gandhinagar highlighted government support, fair pricing debates, and a shift in India’s mobility ecosystem toward cooperative ownership and large-scale national rollout.
The launch event was held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, where Shah inaugurated the service in Ahmedabad, Surat, Dwarka, Vadodara, Rajkot, Somnath, Valsad, Anand, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Nadiad, Junagadh, Mehsana, and Amreli. He announced that the service is set to expand to more than 500 cities across India within the next two years.
The event was attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, Minister Jitu Vaghani, Ministry of Cooperation Secretary Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, senior officials from the cooperative sector, representatives of various institutions, and more than 4,000 “Saarthis” associated with Bharat Taxi.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah stated that reports claiming higher fares under Bharat Taxi were misleading. He further asserted that certain companies were attempting unfair competition by operating at a loss with the intent to push Bharat Taxi out of the market.
Bharat Taxi has been introduced as India’s first cooperative-led, driver-owned ride-hailing service, designed to offer a fair alternative to conventional aggregator platforms. Backed by the Central Government and major cooperative institutions, the service operates on a zero-commission model, allowing drivers to retain the full fare and function as stakeholders in the platform.
The service was initially soft-launched in Gujarat in December 2025, laying the groundwork for its broader expansion. Officials described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening the cooperative movement in the digital mobility sector while empowering drivers economically.
The launch of Bharat Taxi represents a structural shift in India’s transport ecosystem, positioning cooperative ownership at the center of a rapidly evolving ride-hailing industry and signaling an ambitious nationwide rollout strategy.
