Uttarakhand Lychee Makes Historic Debut in European Market as First Consignment Reaches Italy
APEDA has facilitated the first-ever export of fresh Uttarakhand lychee from Dehradun to Italy, marking the fruit's debut in the European market. The one-tonne shipment has delivered approximately 25 per cent higher returns for farmers while strengthening India's reputation as a reliable exporter of premium horticultural products and expanding global market opportunities.
The Ministry stated that Dehradun lychee is widely recognised for its distinctive sweetness, vibrant red colour, delicate aroma, and superior pulp quality. The region is known for producing renowned varieties, including Rose Scented, Calcuttia, and Bedana. The favourable agro-climatic conditions across Uttarakhand, particularly in the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar, play a crucial role in producing the fruit's premium quality and enhancing its appeal in international markets.
The export initiative has also delivered substantial economic benefits to growers. Farmers have received prices approximately 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates, providing stronger financial returns and encouraging the adoption of quality production practices. The development is also expected to promote greater participation in export-oriented horticulture among producers across the state.
The successful shipment was made possible through the coordinated efforts of APEDA, the Government of Uttarakhand, exporters, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), logistics partners, and other stakeholders. The initiative demonstrates the importance of collaboration across the agricultural value chain in enabling Indian produce to gain access to global markets.
The export of fresh Uttarakhand lychee to Italy represents a major step towards diversifying India's export destinations for fresh fruits while reinforcing the country's reputation as a reliable supplier of premium horticultural products. The achievement is expected to strengthen India's presence in international fruit markets and create new opportunities for agricultural exporters and growers alike.
