Science and Technology Become Key Drivers of India’s Development as Government Highlights 12 Years of Transformation

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on the theme “12 Years of Science in Service of India,” Dr Singh said the government’s emphasis on science-led development has enabled technology to become an integral component of major national missions and flagship programmes. He noted that the sector has undergone a significant transformation, marked by increased industry participation, innovation and stronger public-private collaboration.

Highlighting the progress of the biotechnology sector, the Minister said India’s bioeconomy has witnessed substantial expansion over the last decade, reflecting the growing role of scientific innovation in economic development and public welfare.

Dr Singh said scientific institutions across the country have delivered several globally recognised success stories in recent years. He pointed to advancements in biotechnology, gene and cell therapies, the Purple Revolution in Jammu and Kashmir, hydrogen fuel cell technology and enhanced weather forecasting systems as notable examples of science translating into tangible benefits for citizens.

The Minister also underscored reforms introduced in the space, geospatial and nuclear sectors. He said these policy measures have expanded private sector participation, strengthened India’s scientific ecosystem and accelerated innovation across strategic sectors.

According to Dr Singh, India has emerged as a leading global player in science and technology through a combination of policy reforms, innovation-driven growth and sustained institutional support. He said the achievements of the past 12 years demonstrate how scientific advancement has become a cornerstone of national development, reinforcing India’s position on the global innovation landscape while delivering direct benefits to its citizens.
