The soldier, a native of Theni district, was awarded the Kirti Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu on June 8 for his exceptional bravery during a fierce counter-terrorism operation in Kulgam in December 2024. Despite sustaining gunshot injuries to his face and shoulder during the encounter, Lance Naik Sundaram successfully neutralized a terrorist, demonstrating remarkable valor and determination under intense combat conditions.
During the felicitation ceremony, Chief Minister Vijay draped a traditional shawl over the soldier’s shoulders as a mark of respect and appreciation. He also posed for photographs alongside Lance Naik Sundaram, his wife, young children, and government officials present at the event.
The honor comes shortly after the decorated soldier received a hero’s welcome in his native village last week, where residents celebrated his courage and distinguished service to the country.
