Jaishankar Delivers Sharp Rebuttal on Russian Oil, Europe’s Hypocrisy Debate Ignites in Finland

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar responded sharply in Finland to questions on India’s Russian oil imports, defending energy decisions based on market conditions and highlighting global policy inconsistencies. His remarks on Western double standards and military history drew strong reactions and support from Finland’s Foreign Minister.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered a forceful response to a journalist’s question on India’s purchase of Russian oil during a diplomatic event in Finland, leaving the audience in a striking silence and triggering widespread discussion across international media and social platforms.

During the interaction in Finland, a journalist attempted to corner India over its continued imports of Russian oil. Jaishankar responded firmly, stating that India makes its energy purchases based on price and availability. He explained that at the time global markets were disrupted, Russian oil was what remained accessible, as European countries had already secured supplies from traditional Middle Eastern exporters. According to him, global circumstances effectively pushed India toward alternative sources.

Jaishankar further pointed out inconsistencies in international policy, referring to shifting positions by the United States and President Donald Trump on Russian energy imports. He noted that Washington had previously imposed tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil, but later relaxed restrictions, while also acknowledging that continued Russian oil flows helped stabilize global prices and control inflation.

He added that India was being unfairly judged on principles that were selectively applied. “When it suits certain countries, policies change; when it does not, different rules apply. We are fully aware of how this game is played,” he said, drawing attention to perceived double standards in global diplomacy.

In a more pointed remark on military history, Jaishankar stated that no European country has ever been attacked using Indian-made weapons. He contrasted this with India’s experience, asserting that European-origin weapons have been used in attacks against India for decades. When questioned by a journalist seeking clarification, he reiterated that moral arguments must be viewed in the context of historical realities and strategic consequences.

The exchange drew attention when Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen expressed support for India’s position, stating that India’s stance was entirely justified. Jaishankar’s composed demeanor, including a brief smile and a sip of water during the exchange, was widely circulated online, further amplifying the impact of the moment.
