Mumbai Mayor Leads Monsoon Preparedness Drive Across Flood-Prone Zones as BMC Intensifies Action Plan
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde conducted extensive inspections across flood-prone areas including Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Gandhi Market and Hindmata pumping stations to review monsoon preparedness under BMC. Officials discussed drainage upgrades, pumping solutions and long-term flood mitigation strategies for persistent waterlogging zones across the city.
During the visit, Tawde assessed conditions at Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Gandhi Market Pumping Station, and Hindmata Pumping Station. These locations were reviewed to evaluate the operational readiness of drainage systems, pumping facilities, and associated flood mitigation infrastructure.
At Andheri Subway, local Member of Legislative Assembly Murji Patel raised concerns over persistent waterlogging in the low-lying area during heavy rainfall. He stated that flooding has remained a long-standing issue and emphasised the need for a permanent solution. He also noted that the matter has been repeatedly raised in legislative sessions over the years.
Civic officials informed the delegation that multiple proposals are currently under consideration to provide a permanent resolution to flooding at the subway, adding that feasible solutions may be implemented in the near future.
Tawde announced that a joint meeting would soon be convened at the Mayor’s office to deliberate on long-term strategies to address waterlogging at Andheri Subway. She also directed officials to install additional pumping equipment at the site during the ongoing monsoon season to ensure faster drainage of rainwater during heavy downpours.
The Mayor further inspected Milan Subway, Gandhi Market, and Hindmata Pumping Stations, along with the rainwater storage tank projects located at these sites. She reviewed the operational status of all facilities and instructed civic officials to ensure uninterrupted functionality throughout the monsoon period.
The civic administration highlighted the importance of maintaining fully functional pumping infrastructure to reduce flooding risks in vulnerable zones across the city.
During the inspection tour, Tawde also interacted with local residents who raised concerns regarding flooding, drainage inefficiencies, and broader civic infrastructure challenges. She assured citizens that their feedback and suggestions would be incorporated into future monsoon management planning.
The visit concluded with an inspection of the skate park located beneath the Hindmata flyover. Tawde reviewed ongoing cleaning, repair, and repainting work at the facility and directed officials to expedite restoration efforts. She stated that the park should be reopened for athletes and local users at the earliest after completion of the work.
The inspection underscores the city administration’s intensified focus on strengthening monsoon preparedness, improving drainage resilience, and addressing long-standing flooding concerns in Mumbai’s most vulnerable urban corridors.
