Northern Railway Runs 18 Festival Special Trains as Ambala Steps Up Fog Safety Measures
Northern Railway’s Ambala Division is operating 18 festival special trains and strengthening fog safety measures as Diwali and Chhath passenger demand rises. DRM Vinod Bhatia also shares an update on the Kalka–Shimla railway restoration timeline.
Speaking to journalists at Ambala Cantt Railway Station, Ambala Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vinod Bhatia shared key updates on passenger facilities, railway operations and infrastructure development.
The division is operating a total of 18 festival special trains passing through Ambala to facilitate passenger travel during the festive season. In addition, the Railway Board has allocated more than six other special trains to the division. These additional services are intended to help passengers travelling towards major cities secure confirmed seats during the period of increased demand.
With fog expected to affect railway operations in North India, the division has also intensified safety counselling for loco pilots and other crew members. Loco inspectors and crew inspectors are continuously monitoring procedures related to train braking systems and engine controls. These measures are aimed at ensuring that railway operations remain safe, including during emergency situations.
DRM Vinod Bhatia also provided an update on the restoration of the historic Kalka–Shimla heritage railway section, offering relief to tourists travelling to Shimla. He said reconstruction work on the affected track was progressing rapidly.
At present, one train is operating successfully between Dharampur and Shimla, and a second train is expected to begin operating on the section within the next few days. Bhatia expressed hope that once construction and repair work is completed, the entire Kalka–Shimla railway route will reopen for normal traffic by January.
The measures announced by the Ambala Division cover both the immediate challenge of managing festival-related passenger demand and preparations for fog-related operational risks, alongside the planned restoration of rail connectivity on the Kalka–Shimla route.
