Arnab Cyclone Triggers Orange Alert in Gadchiroli as Heavy Rain Threatens East Vidarbha
Cyclone Arnab has prompted an orange alert in Gadchiroli and rainfall warnings across eastern Vidarbha. Heavy rain, strong winds, flash flood risks in Andhra Pradesh and possible flight disruptions have raised concerns across the region.
According to an alert issued by the Nagpur Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several parts of Gadchiroli district could receive heavy rainfall today, October 28. Senior scientist Praveen Kumar of the Nagpur Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rain in several areas of the district.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for Gadchiroli district. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely in isolated areas of Gondia, Bhandara and Chandrapur districts, along with some parts of Nagpur and Wardha districts. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for rainfall across the other districts of eastern Vidarbha, including Gadchiroli. Strong winds may accompany the rainfall in several parts of the region.
The cyclone's effects could also disrupt air travel. Flights arriving in and departing from Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh may be affected by the weather system developing in the Bay of Bengal. Against this backdrop, Air India issued a travel advisory on October 27, urging passengers to remain alert.
The airline stated that adverse weather conditions could lead to changes in flight schedules. Passengers have been advised to check the latest status of their flights on Air India's official website and allow additional time to reach the airport. The advisory also noted that poor weather conditions could affect road transportation.
Meanwhile, the IMD has warned of a moderate to severe risk of flash floods in parts of Anakapalli, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts of Andhra Pradesh over the next six hours. Several areas could also face flooding over the next 24 to 36 hours.
Rainfall data highlights the intensity of precipitation recorded across the affected region. Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh received 217 mm of rainfall, followed by Kalingapatnam with 147 mm, Tuni with 123 mm, Kakinada with 118 mm, Machilipatnam with 115 mm, Gopalpur with 94 mm and Puri in Odisha with 72 mm.
With heavy rainfall warnings, the possibility of flash floods and potential disruptions to air and road travel, the cyclone's projected impact has placed several areas across eastern India and eastern Vidarbha under weather-related alerts.
