The counting of votes for the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers Constituency began on Tuesday, October 27, at the Commerce Faculty Building of Gorakhpur University. The administration had arranged 14 tables for the counting process and deployed staff in two shifts to ensure that the work was completed in an organised manner.
The process began with the opening of ballot boxes. Ballot papers were then arranged into bundles of 50, and their numbers were matched against the figures recorded in Form-16. Once the verification was completed, the counting of ballot papers began.
Since the election was conducted through ballot papers, each ballot had to be examined and votes counted according to the preference marked by the voters. This process contributed to the time required for the counting of votes.
The figures for valid and invalid votes have also emerged as an important aspect of the counting process. Of the total 43,611 votes reported, 40,811 were declared valid and 2,800 invalid.
Police personnel were deployed at the counting venue to maintain security, while senior police officers monitored the arrangements. Counting agents were issued passes, and only pass holders were permitted to enter the counting premises.
The Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers Constituency covers 17 districts, keeping the counting process under close scrutiny by candidates and their supporters.
With Dhruv Tripathi leading by 466 votes over independent candidate Rajiv Yadav in the first-preference vote count, the available figures indicate a closely contested election. The allegations raised by the Samajwadi Party candidate have also brought the counting process into focus, alongside the narrow margin separating the leading candidates.
