Mumbai Police Senior Inspector Dies on Way to Duty; Work Pressure Raises Concerns
Mumbai Police Senior Inspector Sushil Kumar Gaikwad died while travelling to Kurar Police Station from Ulwe. A suspected heart attack and the deaths of two senior inspectors within a month have raised concerns over police workload and pressure.
According to the information available, Gaikwad had attended a birthday celebration for Deputy Commissioner of Police Gajanan Rajamane on Monday evening. After the celebration, he returned to his home in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai.
On Tuesday, Gaikwad left home for duty. During the journey, he told the driver and operator accompanying him that he was not feeling well. He asked for a pillow so he could rest and lay down inside the vehicle.
When they reached Kurar Police Station, the driver called out to Gaikwad but received no response. He then attempted to wake him by shaking him with his hand.
By that time, Gaikwad’s body had turned cold, and foam was coming out of his mouth. The driver and operator immediately took him to DNA Hospital in Pathanwadi, where doctors examined him and declared him dead.
According to preliminary information, a heart attack is suspected to have caused his death.
Two Senior Inspectors Die Within a Month
The deaths of two senior police inspectors within a month have raised concerns within the police department.
Earlier this month, Senior Police Inspector Shivaji Jadhav also passed away. Both Gaikwad and Jadhav had been promoted from police inspector to senior police inspector around seven months ago.
Work Pressure Under Discussion
Following the deaths, discussions have emerged within the police department over work pressure and the continuous instructions issued by senior officers.
Police personnel have also pointed out that officers are responsible not only for maintaining law and order but also for handling matters related to hawkers, Waghari settlements, the Slum Rehabilitation Authority, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the Forest Department in their respective areas.
These additional responsibilities are being cited as factors contributing to the increasing workload on police officers.
The deaths of the two senior inspectors within a short period have brought renewed attention to the workload and responsibilities shouldered by police personnel alongside their law-and-order duties.
