Indian Railways is preparing to launch a second Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between New Delhi and Varanasi on October 31. Discover its proposed route, four intermediate stops, 823 berths, speed specifications and onboard safety features.
According to a notification issued by the Railway Board on October 27, the train will operate under numbers 27421 and 27422. The service between New Delhi and Varanasi will have scheduled stops at Prayagraj, Kanpur Central, Aligarh and Ghaziabad. These halts are expected to improve travel convenience for passengers travelling overnight between the capital and key cities in Uttar Pradesh.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has been designed specifically for long-distance overnight journeys. Developed under the Make in India initiative, the train will comprise 16 air-conditioned coaches. According to the railway specifications, it has a maximum test speed of 180 kilometres per hour and an operational speed of 160 kilometres per hour.
The train will offer a total of 823 berths across three accommodation classes. First AC will have 24 berths, Second AC will provide 188 berths, and Third AC will account for 611 berths. The arrangement is intended to accommodate passengers with different travel requirements across the three air-conditioned categories.
To improve passenger convenience during overnight journeys, the train will also feature 52 vacuum toilets, sealed gangways and a mini-pantry. These facilities have been incorporated into the train's design to support onboard services and provide a more comfortable travel experience over long distances.
Safety features will include the indigenous Kavach train protection system, CCTV surveillance and fire-extinguishing arrangements. According to ANI, the train will also incorporate features compliant with the EN 15227 crashworthiness standard and the EN 45545 HL3 fire-safety standard. In addition, regenerative braking technology will be used to improve energy efficiency.
The proposed introduction of the second Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on the New Delhi–Varanasi route will provide passengers with another option for overnight rail travel. With 16 air-conditioned coaches, 823 berths across three classes, designated stops at four major stations and multiple safety systems, the service is expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the national capital and Varanasi while improving travel options for passengers along the route.
