Zelenskyy Ready to Freeze Ukraine War Front Lines, Raises Questions Over Territory
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is ready to freeze the current front lines to end the war with Russia. His remarks raise questions over territorial concessions, security guarantees and the future of millions of displaced Ukrainians.
More than four years have passed since the Russia-Ukraine war began. However, recent developments have raised hopes that the conflict could be moving towards an end. Zelenskyy's latest statement has brought renewed attention to the possibility of a ceasefire based on the current positions of Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Freezing the front lines would mean that the Russian and Ukrainian armies would stop advancing and remain in the positions they currently hold.
Zelenskyy Says Freezing Front Lines Is the Only Realistic Way to End War
During an interview with a media outlet on Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was asked whether he would accept a peace agreement that froze the conflict in its current state, allowing Ukraine to retain 75 per cent or more of its territory, regardless of how the war began.
Responding to the question, Zelenskyy said, "Yes, we need to stop it right here. I think this is the only realistic way to end this war."
He added that the arrangement could be called a ceasefire or, in the words of US President Donald Trump, "stopping the killings."
Zelenskyy's remarks indicate that he is willing to consider an agreement that halts military operations along the existing front lines, rather than continuing the fighting in an attempt to change territorial positions.
Zelenskyy to Seek Security Guarantees From Trump and European Countries
Zelenskyy said the war should be stopped at its current stage and stressed that Ukraine needed at least this much from Russia under the present circumstances.
He said that after the fighting was halted, Ukraine would approach US President Donald Trump and other European countries to seek security guarantees.
The Ukrainian president's statement comes as Ukraine has appeared increasingly vulnerable in its confrontation with Russia over the past few days.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has placed the responsibility for ending the war on China and the United States.
The question of whether a ceasefire could be achieved by freezing the current front lines has therefore become central to the ongoing discussion about ending the conflict.
Zelenskyy Says 9.5 Million Ukrainians Have Lost Their Homes
During the interview, Zelenskyy also highlighted the humanitarian impact of the war, saying that 9.5 million Ukrainians had lost their homes and were living abroad or in other places.
"The most important thing is not to be afraid. We have 9.5 million people who have lost their homes and are living abroad or elsewhere. We need them. We want them to return to Ukraine, live here and rebuild their country," Zelenskyy said.
His remarks underscored the importance of bringing displaced Ukrainians back to their homes and enabling them to participate in rebuilding the country.
Zelenskyy's willingness to freeze the front lines, coupled with his demand for security guarantees from the United States and European countries, signals a possible approach to ending the war. However, the question of territorial control remains a key issue, as the proposal would leave Russian and Ukrainian forces in their current positions.
