Stock Market Crash: Sensex Plunges 826 Points as Nifty Falls Ahead of Jio IPO
The Sensex plunged 826 points and the Nifty fell sharply on Wednesday ahead of the planned Jio Platforms listing. Rising Brent crude prices above $115 and heavy selling in IT stocks intensified market pressure.
The sharp fall in the benchmark indices highlighted the pressure on investor sentiment ahead of the highly anticipated Jio Platforms listing. Alongside the weakness in IT stocks, a renewed surge in crude oil prices emerged as another major factor weighing on the market.
Sensex and Nifty Open Deep in the Red
On Wednesday, the stock market opened lower amid negative global signals, with both benchmark indices entering the red zone. The BSE Sensex, which had closed at 73,598 in the previous trading session, fell to 73,253 at the opening. Within minutes, the 30-share index dropped 826 points to 72,872.
The NSE Nifty also witnessed heavy selling pressure from the opening bell. The 50-share index, which had ended the previous session at 22,749, opened lower at 22,678 before extending its losses. At the time of writing, the Nifty was trading at 22,540, reflecting the sharp downward movement across the market.
The decline came as investors assessed negative global cues and mounting pressure on heavyweight stocks, with the market's performance drawing particular attention because of the planned listing of Reliance Jio Platforms on the same day.
IT Stocks Lead the Market Decline
Information technology stocks were among the biggest contributors to Wednesday's market sell-off. Major IT companies came under significant selling pressure during early trading, with several prominent stocks recording substantial losses.
Infosys shares were down 4.50%, while Tech Mahindra shares declined 3.50%. TCS shares fell 3%, and HCL Technologies shares dropped 2.50%.
The weakness extended beyond the IT sector, affecting several other large-cap stocks. ITC shares were trading 2.20% lower, Bajaj Finserv shares declined 2%, and ICICI Bank shares were down 1.70%.
The broad-based losses among heavyweight stocks added to the pressure on the benchmark indices, with the sharp declines in leading IT companies standing out during the early trading session.
Why Did the Stock Market Crash?
A renewed surge in crude oil prices was among the major factors behind Wednesday's market decline. After falling on Tuesday, Brent crude oil prices rose again, crossing the $115-per-barrel mark.
The increase in crude oil prices heightened inflation concerns and weakened market sentiment. The latest price movement added to the pressure on equities as investors reacted to the prospect of higher oil costs.
Selling pressure in IT stocks was another key factor behind the fall in the Sensex and Nifty. Heavy losses in Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra weighed on the broader market, while declines in other large-cap companies reinforced the downward trend.
With the Sensex falling 826 points to 72,872 and the Nifty trading at 22,540 at the time of writing, the market faced a sharp opening-session sell-off on a day marked by the planned listing of Reliance Jio Platforms. The combination of rising crude oil prices, inflation concerns and weakness in major IT stocks shaped the market's early performance.
