Sony Launches Alpha 7R VI in India With 66.8MP Sensor and 8K Video
Sony India has launched the Alpha 7R VI at Rs. 4,70,990, featuring a 66.8MP sensor, AI autofocus and 8K video. Explore its professional features, XLR-A4 adaptor, accessories and limited-period battery offer.
Sony India has also introduced the XLR-A4 XLR adaptor, which expands on-camera audio capabilities for professional productions, including 32-bit float recording.
“The Alpha 7R VI represents the next chapter in Sony's commitment to imaging innovation, bringing together exceptional resolution, AI-powered intelligence, and professional-grade performance in our most advanced Alpha R series camera yet. Designed for creators who demand uncompromising image quality and speed, it empowers photographers and filmmakers to capture every moment with extraordinary precision and creative freedom,” said Mukesh Srivastava, Head-Imaging & Professional Solution Business, Sony India.
The Alpha 7R VI features a full-frame, fully stacked Exmor RS sensor with approximately 66.8 effective megapixels, delivering up to 16 stops of dynamic range and reduced noise in the mid-sensitivity range. Its five-axis optical image stabilisation provides compensation of up to 8.5 stops at the centre and 7.0 stops at the periphery.
The camera also features Auto White Balance powered by a visible light and infrared sensor, along with deep-learning-based illumination estimation, to deliver stable and natural colours in shaded and indoor scenes.
AI-powered autofocus and high-speed continuous shooting
The Alpha 7R VI uses the BIONZ XR2 engine with an integrated AI processing unit. Its sensor readout is approximately 5.6 times faster than the previous model, enabling blackout-free continuous shooting at up to approximately 30 frames per second.
The camera can perform up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second with autofocus and auto-exposure tracking. Its Real-time Recognition AF+ system uses skeletal-based human pose estimation and tracking to maintain reliable focus on fast-moving subjects, including athletes and dynamic scenes.
Designed for professional photography
The camera is powered by a new NP-SA100 high-capacity battery with a capacity of 2,670 mAh. According to Sony, it supports up to 710 still images using the LCD monitor or 600 images through the viewfinder under CIPA standards, reducing the need for battery changes during extended shoots.
The Alpha 7R VI features an approximately 9.44-million-dot OLED viewfinder with a DCI-P3-equivalent colour gamut and 10-bit HDR. Its maximum brightness is approximately three times higher than conventional models, helping improve visibility in bright environments.
Effective heat management enables uninterrupted 8K movie recording for up to 120 minutes under specified conditions.
Other features include dual USB Type-C ports for simultaneous charging and data transfer, illuminated rear buttons for low-light operation, a lightweight and durable magnesium alloy body, and a four-axis multi-angle LCD monitor for flexible shooting angles.
The camera also includes a mode-dial Memory Recall function, which allows shooting setups to be linked to customisable buttons.
Sony's Camera Authenticity Solution, including the C2PA standard, is supported, enabling verification that still images and videos were captured using a camera and were not AI-generated.
Professional video capabilities
The Alpha 7R VI supports 8K 30p recording with 8.2K oversampling, along with full-frame 4K 60p and 120p recording without crop.
It also introduces Dual Gain Shooting, a first for the Alpha series, to optimise sensor performance and reduce noise while retaining shadow detail, smooth gradation and wide latitude.
The redesigned in-camera stabilisation system expands roll-direction compensation by 2x. Dynamic Active Mode provides smooth and steady handheld footage.
When paired with the XLR-A4 XLR adaptor, the camera supports internal 32-bit float audio recording, eliminating the need for fine adjustment of audio levels on location. Sony notes that audio clipping that has already occurred at the microphone input stage cannot be restored during post-production.
XLR-A4 XLR adaptor expands audio recording options
The newly introduced XLR-A4 XLR adaptor supports in-camera digital audio recording with up to four channels. It can connect XLR microphones, including the ECM-778, supporting up to two channels, as well as 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack microphones through the Multi Interface Shoe.
Dual AD converters digitise microphone signals across a wide dynamic range, capturing quiet ambience and loud action with clarity.
On compatible cameras, the adaptor records digital audio at up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float and four channels. The format eliminates the need for fine gain adjustment on location and reduces the risk of audio distortion.
Compared with the XLR-K3M, the adaptor has a lower-profile height design and reinforced chassis structure for stable shooting in on-location scenarios.
A supplied shoe audio extension cable allows the adaptor to be positioned up to approximately 60 cm from the camera, while side routing minimises interference with rigs and accessories.
The XLR-A4 is also USB Audio Class 2.0 compatible and functions as a 96 kHz, 24-bit, two-channel audio interface when connected to a PC for on-site audio monitoring and editing.
Optional accessories for the Alpha 7R VI
Sony has introduced a range of optional accessories to enhance power management, ergonomics and workflow efficiency for professional creators. These are sold separately.
The NP-SA100 rechargeable battery pack features Info LITHIUM functionality and delivers approximately 1.3 times the power capacity of the NP-FZ100 Z-series battery. It integrates with the camera's power management system to optimise endurance and thermal behaviour and includes an in-camera battery deterioration indicator.
The VG-C6 vertical grip is designed for comfortable vertical or horizontal shooting and can house up to two high-capacity SA-series batteries. Its dust- and moisture-resistant construction is equivalent to that of the camera body.
The BC-SAD1 dedicated battery charger supports the NP-SA100 battery. With a USB Power Delivery source of 45 W or higher, it can charge two batteries to 100% simultaneously in approximately 115 minutes, or charge one battery to 80% in approximately 55 minutes and to full capacity in approximately 55 minutes. The charger also displays battery pack deterioration status during charging.
The DC-C2 coupler provides stable continuous power through an external USB Power Delivery source of 100 W or higher, using a USB-C to USB-C cable.
