Mumbai GRP Rescues Abducted One-Year-Old Girl Within 24 Hours, Arrests Woman
Mumbai GRP rescued a one-year-old girl allegedly abducted from CSMT and arrested a woman within 24 hours. In a separate case, railway police arrested an alleged serial train thief and recovered jewellery worth Rs 48.30 lakh.
The child was sleeping beside her parents near platforms 12 and 13 when an unidentified woman allegedly took her during the early hours of October 16, 2026.
The family, originally from Dharashiv, had missed their train and fallen asleep on a steel bench at the station. Taking advantage of the situation, the woman allegedly abducted the child between 4 am and 5.25 am.
Following the incident, a case was registered at CSMT Railway Police Station under Section 137(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Senior railway police officials formed four special investigation teams, which worked in coordination with the Local Crime Branch to trace the child and identify the suspect.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from CSMT and several suburban railway stations. The footage reportedly showed the woman boarding a 5.22 am Panvel slow local train from platform 2.
Police tracked her movements through subsequent stations and found that she changed trains at Masjid station, boarding a down slow local towards Titwala. Frame-by-frame analysis of CCTV footage from stations along the route indicated that she alighted at Diva railway station.
The investigation then focused on the Sadguru Nagar area of Diva in Thane, where police conducted local inquiries and gathered confidential information to identify the suspect's residence.
The team subsequently raided the location, rescued the baby unharmed and detained the suspect within 24 hours of the crime being reported. Coordination between the special investigation teams and the Local Crime Branch, along with CCTV footage analysis, played a key role in tracing the alleged abduction route.
In a separate incident, Mumbai railway police arrested an alleged serial train thief and recovered gold jewellery worth over Rs 48 lakh, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Krishnakumar Ramashray Pandey, 40, was arrested in Nagod in Madhya Pradesh's Satna district following a joint operation by the Railway Police's Special Task Force (STF) and the Nerul unit of the Crime Branch.
The theft occurred on October 9 while a 62-year-old passenger and his family were travelling from Chiplun to Mumbai aboard the Sawantwadi-CSMT Express.
"Gold jewellery weighing 358.67 grams, along with two mobile phones, collectively valued at Rs 48.30 lakh was stolen aboard an express train," an official said.
The two cases highlight separate railway crime investigations in which police action led to the rescue of an allegedly abducted infant and the arrest of a suspect accused of stealing jewellery worth Rs 48.30 lakh from a train passenger.
