Sensex Falls Over 350 Points at Opening as IT Stocks Slide; Nifty Drops Below 22,700
The Sensex plunged more than 350 points from its opening level while the Nifty slipped to 22,653 on Tuesday. Infosys, TCS and HCL Tech led losses as 1,000 stocks opened lower amid weak global cues.
The 30-share BSE Sensex opened at 73,484, compared with its previous close of 73,606. Within seconds of the opening bell, the index fell to 73,210, reflecting renewed selling pressure. The NSE Nifty 50 followed a similar trajectory, opening at 22,708 against its previous close of 22,753 before slipping to 22,653.
IT Stocks Lead Market Decline
Amid the broader market weakness, several large-cap stocks traded lower. Infosys shares fell 2.70%, while Hindustan Unilever (HUL) declined 2%. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) dropped 1.80%, Asian Paints fell 1.50%, and HCL Technologies declined 1.40%.
Selling pressure was also visible in the mid-cap segment. Mphasis shares were down 1.50%, Alkem Laboratories declined 1.20%, and Paytm slipped 1.10%.
The losses among major IT companies stood out as the Sensex and Nifty struggled to maintain their opening levels, leaving investors watching for signs of a market recovery.
1,000 Stocks Open in the Red
The Indian stock market began Tuesday’s session on a weak note amid subdued global cues. Of the approximately 1,244 listed stocks that recorded movements at the opening, 1,000 opened lower than their previous closing prices and entered the red zone. Meanwhile, 158 stocks opened unchanged, with no movement compared with their previous closes.
On the Nifty, Tata Consumer Products, BSE Ltd, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, NTPC and Shriram Finance were among the top gainers. On the other hand, JSW Steel, HUL, HCL Tech, Tata Steel and Grasim Industries were among the stocks registering losses.
Monday’s Volatility Still in Focus
The weak opening followed a volatile session on Monday. During the initial hours of trading, the Sensex and Nifty had witnessed a sharp crash. However, after fluctuating throughout the session, both indices recovered and ended the day with strong gains.
Tuesday’s opening decline again put the spotlight on market volatility, with benchmark indices under pressure and IT stocks among the major drags. The contrasting movements across the two sessions highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the market’s near-term direction.
