The controversy began after Rashmika and Vijay appeared together on Koffee with Karan 9, where they spoke to host Karan Johar about their relationship and marriage. A portion of their conversation went viral on social media, prompting several users to question Vijay’s behaviour and comment on their relationship.
One user described Vijay as a “walking red flag” and wrote that he had humiliated his wife in front of the entire world. Another user advised Rashmika that she deserved someone better. A third user commented that Rashmika liked Vijay, while Vijay liked himself. Some users also described the couple’s conversation as “cringe”.
Vijay’s statement about asking Rashmika 100 times about marriage also attracted criticism. Some users interpreted the remark as a sign of inequality in their relationship and questioned the dynamic between the two.

Following the online discussion, Rashmika wrote a lengthy post on social media to address the criticism. She began by explaining that she generally chose not to respond to such comments because everyone had the right to express their opinions. However, she decided to speak out this time because of the growing discussion about her relationship with Vijay.
Rashmika wrote that both their social media profiles had been flooded with unsolicited opinions, comments and advice. She said she was genuinely shaken by the confidence with which people had targeted them and had stepped back to reflect before sharing her perspective on her personal life.
Addressing the discussion about Vijay asking her 100 times about marriage, Rashmika clarified that the issue had never been about the number of times he asked or about an entire year. She said people had become fixated on that particular aspect of their conversation.
“Yes, that conversation happened. But neither of us was looking for a grand or elaborate proposal,” she explained.
According to Rashmika, Vijay wanted them to have the time and space to understand each other and make sure they were both making the right choice. She said the decision was about being certain that they wanted to spend their lives together through all the good and bad times, happiness and stress, and that it was the right time for them.
She added that they had taken that time, understood each other and ultimately chosen one another.
Rashmika also told people that they did not need to worry about her relationship with Vijay. Expressing her affection for her husband, she said she was “obsessed” with him and questioned when expressing so much love for one’s partner had become a bad thing.
“If I had to make the same choice in life again, I would choose Vijay again,” she wrote.
Rashmika further said that she would have been willing to ask Vijay the same question not just 100 times, but even 1,000 times.
Soon after Rashmika shared her statement, Vijay posted photographs and videos with his wife on Instagram. Addressing the discussion about their relationship, he described Rashmika as his best friend, wife and companion.
“My best friend, my wife, my companion. One of the most beautiful parts of my life, a choice I got absolutely right,” Vijay wrote.
He also reassured people who were concerned about the couple, stating that they were both extremely happy. Vijay added that he considered himself fortunate to have Rashmika in his life.
“If it is just me and her against the whole world, so be it,” he wrote, concluding his message by sending love to everyone who celebrated living a simple life filled with love and happiness.
