Mumbai Local Accident: College Student Sahil Thite Dies After AC Train Hits Him in Bhandup
Mumbai Central Railway services were disrupted for over nine hours after a signalling failure, while college student Sahil Thite died after an AC local hit him at Bhandup station, raising fresh concerns over railway safety.
The fatal accident occurred on platform number 3 at Bhandup railway station. An AC local travelling from Mumbai towards Kalyan via Thane struck the young man as he was crossing the tracks. The impact was severe, and the youth was dragged for some distance by the train. He sustained critical injuries and died at the spot.
Preliminary information gathered during the subsequent investigation indicated that the deceased was a college student. Following the incident, railway police and concerned railway personnel immediately reached the spot. The police took custody of the body and initiated the necessary legal formalities.
The accident occurred on a day when Central Railway commuters were already facing considerable difficulties because of a technical failure that disrupted suburban train operations for more than nine hours. The incident has once again brought the issue of passenger safety on railway premises into focus.
The disruption began at around 10 am on Monday, the first day of the working week, when a major failure affected Central Railway’s signalling system. According to the available information, a fire broke out in a signal cabin at around 10 am, following which all signals beyond Kanjurmarg railway station stopped functioning.
As a result, motormen had to halt local trains at their respective locations. Services on both the up and down lines, affecting slow and fast corridors, were severely disrupted. With trains remaining stationary for one or two hours, several passengers got down onto the railway tracks and walked towards the next station in an attempt to continue their journeys.

Initially, there was an expectation that the signalling system would be restored within the next few hours. However, the technical failure continued to affect operations, throwing the local train timetable into complete disarray.
The prolonged disruption caused considerable hardship for daily commuters throughout the day. By the evening rush hour, railway stations across the Central Railway network were witnessing heavy crowds as passengers struggled to reach their destinations.
Commuters expressed strong anger over Central Railway’s handling of the situation, while the fatal accident at Bhandup added another serious concern amid the chaos. The signalling failure and the death of the young passenger highlighted two major challenges facing commuters that day: disrupted suburban services and safety risks associated with crossing railway tracks.
