Five Brands Dominate India's Used Car Market, Maruti Suzuki Leads With 33.2% Share

Five brands account for 75.5% of used car sales on Cars24, with Maruti Suzuki leading at 33.2%. Discover which models dominate each brand, why the Swift tops the rankings and how buyers are choosing hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs.

Five brands account for 75.5% of used car sales through one of India's largest organised resale platforms, highlighting the concentration of demand in the country's pre-owned vehicle market. Maruti Suzuki leads with a 33.2% share, followed by Hyundai, Honda, Tata and Mahindra, according to transaction data from Cars24.

The figures show how buyers continue to favour established brands and familiar models when purchasing used cars. Within each brand, a handful of models account for a substantial portion of sales, reflecting the importance of resale value, service reach and spare parts availability in purchase decisions.

The data, derived from Cars24's internal vehicle transactions till July 2026, covers the best-selling used car brands in India in 2026. Brand shares represent their proportion of all used car sales, while individual model shares indicate their contribution within their respective brands.

At the model level, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is the best-selling used car overall, accounting for 4.8% of all sales. Hatchbacks remain the most in-demand body style.

Maruti Suzuki leads the market with 33.2% of used car sales, accounting for roughly one in every three vehicles sold. Its demand is spread across a wide range of models rather than being concentrated around a single nameplate.

The Swift accounts for 14.5% of Maruti Suzuki's used sales, followed by the Wagon R 1.0 at 10.2% and the Swift Dzire at 8.1%. Together, the three models contribute 32.8% of the brand's sales.

The Swift's position as the best-selling used car overall further strengthens Maruti Suzuki's lead in the resale market.

Hyundai ranks second with a 21.6% share of used car sales. The i10, accounting for 15.4% of Hyundai's used sales, and the Grand i10, at 12.5%, form the core of the brand's demand.

The Creta follows at 9.7% of Hyundai's used sales and is the only SUV among the brand's top three models. Its position indicates that demand for Hyundai's SUVs is extending the popularity the brand has established through its hatchbacks.

Petrol cars lead the fuel mix at Hyundai, as they do at Maruti Suzuki. Together, the two brands account for 54.8% of all used car sales, making their petrol models among the most widely available options for buyers.

Manual transmissions remain the preferred choice for Hyundai's i10, with more than 92% of buyers opting for the manual version.

Honda accounts for 8.2% of used car sales and has the most concentrated model demand among the five brands.

The City contributes 41.1% of Honda's used sales, followed by the Amaze at 22.1% and the Jazz at 9.6%. Together, the three models account for nearly three in every four used Hondas sold.

The City alone represents 3.4% of all used car sales and is the best-selling used sedan. Honda's position in the resale market is therefore largely driven by the City, with its reputation for comfort and reliability supporting demand despite the brand's relatively limited model concentration.

Tata holds a 7.8% share of used car sales, led by the Tiago, Nexon and Altroz.

The Tiago accounts for 23.1% of Tata's used sales, while the Nexon contributes 20.7% and the Altroz 9.1%. The Tiago and Nexon together make up 43.8% of the brand's used sales, highlighting the importance of one compact hatchback and one compact SUV to Tata's resale demand.

The Nexon, launched in 2017, is a newer entrant than most of the models featured in the rankings. It already accounts for more than a fifth of Tata's used car sales.

Mahindra ranks fifth among the brands, with a 4.7% share of used car sales. Its resale demand is concentrated almost entirely around SUVs.

The XUV500 leads Mahindra's used sales at 29.4%, followed by the XUV300 at 10.8% and the Scorpio at 10.4%.

Although the XUV500 was discontinued in 2021 in favour of the XUV700, it continues to attract used car buyers. Demand remains centred on a proven seven-seater with a strong diesel engine.

Diesel dominates the fuel mix across Mahindra's used SUVs. Buyers are generally seeking larger vehicles with a reputation for toughness at a lower price than a comparable newer SUV. Comparing used car prices across brands remains an important part of shortlisting vehicles.

Across the five brands, the data shows that buyers continue to favour established models rather than a broad range of newer options. The degree of concentration varies considerably.

Honda puts 72.8% of its used sales into three models, while Maruti Suzuki's top three account for just 32.8%. Hatchbacks lead most of the brand-level rankings, while sedans dominate Honda's sales and SUVs form the core of Mahindra's used car demand.

Manual cars continue to dominate across the brands.

The transaction figures highlight how established nameplates and models with a history of market demand continue to shape India's used car market. With five brands accounting for 75.5% of sales on the platform, the data points to a resale market where buyer preferences remain strongly tied to familiar vehicles and their established presence.
